A survey revealed that the average age of owners of substantial business in Australia was 56. Seventy percent wished to sell within ten years. More than half of Australia’s private and family businesses are planning to sell out over the next 10 years. But there is a problem - while 74% said they'd quit now if approached, less than 50% had made plans for it. And it could turn out to be an over-crowded market, with more "for sale" signs than buyers.
The Age newspaper reported that less than 13% of owners actually have a saleable business and many walk away from a lifelong commitment with little or nothing to show for it and certainly without selling for the potential they have developed.
